Bake the pie shell.

In a saucepan heat the chocolate pieces, sugar, and milk over low heat, stirring until chocolate is melted. Cool.
Beat in egg yolks, one at a time.
Stir in vanilla.
Beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff.
Fold in chocolate mixture.
Pour into baked pie shell.
Refrigerate several hours or overnight. If desired garnish with whipped cream and sprinkle with roasted sliced almonds.

This is the pie I always made because it isn't too rich or sweet. If you are worried about the raw eggs, get the pasteurized safe kind. We had some friends over who had a 1 year old baby - she had the most wonderful time eating this pie. She looked like Al Jolson when she was finished.
