Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening (half butter)
- 1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy
- 1/2 cup sugar
Directions
Makes 4 dozen. Mix first five ingredients. Sift flour and salt and add to above. Divide dough in half. Add coloring to half. Roll a 4" strip(using 1 tsp of dough) from each color. For smooth even strips, roll back and forth on lightly floured board. Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist. Do cookies one at a time or strips will dry out. Place on ungreased baking sheet Bake 9 " until light brown. Remove from baking sheet and sprinkle with mixture of candy and sugar.
